Implemented in 2006, the Southwest Reining Horse Association’s Online Stallion Service Auction is one of the most successful in the reining industry and has helped the SWRHA Futurity to become and remain one of the National Reining Horse Association’s top money-added futurities. The 20th annual auction begins Jan. 15 and concludes on Feb. 15 at 8 pm.
For mare owners, it’s a great place to shop for a stallion for the current breeding season and there are always many choices at every price level. Often the stallion services sells for less than the advertised fee. Plus, resulting foals are eligible for a free entry into the Open Level 4 Futurity or the Non Pro Level 4 Futurity.
Stallion Auction Manager Lindsey McCutcheon is looking forward to this year’s auction. “We are very excited to offer such a phenomenal group of stallions in this year’s auction. A huge ‘Thank You!’ goes out to all the stallion owners who have donated.”
Stallions will continue to be added to the auction in coming weeks. Lindsey adds, “Don’t miss your opportunity to bid on some of the best stallions in the industry!”
The auction proceeds provide the bulk of the added money for the Southwest Reining Horse Association Futurity, set for Oct. 17-25. In the formula implemented from the beginning, 80 percent of the proceeds of the auction becomes added money for the futurity, and 5 percent is used for administration of the auction. The remaining 15% provides awards for participating stallion owners whose breedings sold in the auction. Each year a customized golf cart is given to the owner of the sire of L4 Open and L4 Non Pro Champions or highest placing finalists sired by a participating stallion. There is also a special drawing for another golf cart from all participating stallion owners whose breeding sold! Buckles are given to the owners of the sires of other division champions or highest finishing horses by participating stallions.
The formula for giving back to the stallion owners has been popular and the golf carts and buckles have become sought-after symbols of sire excellence since the program’s inception.
The Southwest Reining Horse Association has been one of the industry’s largest and most successful affiliate organizations since its beginning in 1984. The primary mission of the SWRHA is to promote the breeding, training, and exhibition of the reining horse and its signature event each year is the annual futurity. Tagged by former president Jack Covington, who implemented the first auction, as “Where the Best Go First,” the SWRHA Futurity is a must-attend event for reiners. For many, it is the final stop before the National Reining Horse Association Futurity in Oklahoma City.
