Dana Wetherell and stallion Spat Toy Boy Gun clinched the Rookie Level 2 Championship at the SWRHA Futurity Thursday afternoon with a score of 72.5.
“He’s a stud and a paint, which is totally not what I was looking for when we were looking for in a new horse, but he fits me in every way and he has a great feel. He’s super willing and just the best-minded, sweetest boy,” Wetherell said. “Every day I pinch myself that he’s my horse.”
Sired by Split Splat And White and out of Snowy River Gunner, Spat Toy Boy Gun came from Gina Schumacher.
“I am still getting to know him and you know, Gina is such a great rider so I think sometimes he’s like ‘You’re not asking me exactly correct.’ My main thing with him right now is to get a few smooth runs in, figure out his buttons, stay out of his way and get my timing right,” Wetherell said.
Spat Toy Boy Gun is Wetherell’s first derby horse, so she is headed for the limited age competitions next year. She thanked her husband for selling two of his personal reining horses so they could buy him.
“I [also] want to thank Trevor and Laura Dare. Trevor found him for me, and he’s done so much. The entire barn is amazing, super helpful and you can barely pick up a brush over there and they run you off,” Wetherell said.
