Jared Leclair cleaned house at the SWRHA Futurity in the Novice Horse Open, gathering two Co-Championships in the second slate and winning all three highpoint levels aboard Lil Spook In Bueno.
With a score of 72, Leclair earned $688 for owners Helen and Barry Bearden.
“He’s a four-year-old Wimpy gelding that we bought at the Futurity last year from Jordan Larson. I’m making him a non pro horse so I’ve been showing him, getting him seasoned,” Leclair explained. “When I’m training a non pro horse, I really don’t do anything different. The big thing for me with a non pro horse is that they’ve got to be shown a lot. They’ve got to get in the pen and get used to doing their job. When they get comfortable enough with me doing it then I transfer the non pros [on].”
According to Leclair, the only difference between an open and non pro horse for him is their ability.
“For me, the horses have to do it for me. For the way I ride and my style I have to create that desire to do their job. It takes a little bit longer to train that way but they last a long time,” Leclair said.
Lil Spook In Bueno is getting plenty of arena time at the SWRHA Futurity, with Leclair showing him twice in the Novice Horse and his assistant showing him in the Rookie Professional.
Sired by Wimpys Little Step and out of Buena Spook, Lil Spook In Bueno is fitting the bill of a suitable non pro horse.
Leclair thanked his owners, help and most importantly his wife, Karla, for her support.
