Trevor Dare & Xtra Wimpys Catalyst Win Open (1)
Trevor Dare and Xtra Wimpys Catalyst have qualified to compete at the American Quarter Horse Association World Championship Show, so Dare elected to show the four-year-old reiner in the Open class in Ardmore. “I was just going to cruise him through. The last couple times we showed were really high-pressure situations, so I just wanted a nice, cool-down run. He ended up giving me more and was really good,” Dare explained.
Dare and Xtra Wimpys Catalyst, by Wimpys Little Step out of Im Not Blonde, marked a 74.5 to win the class, collecting $1,187. Xtra Wimpys Catalyst is owned by Ixtul Quarter Horses LLC. “I didn’t do much to prepare him. The last couple times we showed I had to ask for everything he had. I’ve been letting a guy I work with exercise and keep him fitted up for me. I brought him here and he felt good,” Dare said. “I thank the owner, Ixtul Quarter Horses, Thiago Boechat, and the whole team.”
Dany Tremblay and Tinker With Dreams finished second in the Open. The pair marked a 74 and won $816. Tinker With Dreams is owned by Diamond Dub Quarter Horses.
Melanie Petroll Wins Int. Open (1) Co-Championship on Dun Its Red Berry
Melanie Petroll wasn’t expecting to show Dun Its Red Berry at the SWRHA Futurity & Horse Show, but when owner Lisa Klaus suffered an injury, Petroll took the reins. “Unfortunately she broke her arm three days ago. She was going to show him, but I got to instead. I can’t wait until she gets to show him,” Petroll said.
Petroll and Dun Its Red Berry marked a 71 to tie for the win of the Intermediate Open class, winning $472.
Dun Its Red Berry, a 10-year-old gelding by Hollywood Dun It out of Great Red Berry, was owned by another of Petroll’s customers for several years before Klaus purchased the gelding. “She had to retire her old show mare, so this horse is pretty special for her,” Petroll explained. “He’s easy to get ready. He felt good everywhere. We probably had a one-point penalty on a turn, but everywhere else he was really solid. He was very honest today.”
Melanie’s husband Sebastian will be showing in the Billingsley Ford Open Futurity on Saturday, and the couple has several customers showing throughout the week. “I thank Lisa Klaus, my husband, the girls who work for us, and all our customers,” she said.
Tying for the win of the Intermediate Open was Gloria Spiaggi and Mizzen You, owned by Reign Quarter Horses LLC. Mizzen You, by Jacs Electric Spark out of West Coast Mizzen, won $472.
McKinnon Larcombe & Designed With Shine Sweep First Slate of Non Pro Ancillary Classes
The team of McKinnon Larcombe and Designed With Shine have dominated Non Pro ancillary classes in 2019. The duo did it again in Ardmore, winning the Non Pro, Int. Non Pro, and Ltd. Non Pro classes on Thursday with a score of 74.5. The day’s work netted $1,603.
“She was good like she always is. She always has a certain feeling about her that I know when she is going to be good, and I was warming her up out back and she had that feel. I knew if the run wasn’t good it was because I screwed up. We went in and she was good everywhere,” she said. “This is one of those arenas that horses can have a hard time focusing. She was looking around as we went in, but as soon as we started to show she was all business and did her job.”
The first time Larcombe showed Designed With Shine, by Smart And Shiney out of Taris Designer Genes, was at the Tulsa Ride & Slide. “I only showed her twice there, and then we’ve only really gone to the major events. I’ve really, in the scheme of things, haven’t shown her all that much,” she said. “But she’s always the same and keeps getting better.”
Larcombe will show Designed With Shine again on Sunday in the Non Pro and Youth classes, but throughout the week will be helping her father, Martin Larcombe, and taking care of her other business. “I have my photography business. I also work for a handful of trainers and owners running their social media and doing their marketing. It is enjoyable to me because that is something I really love to do. I love the horse industry and helping people out. It’s become a full-time thing,” the 18-year-old said.
“Plus, at the barn, I’m always saddling and helping my dad out. I can’t complain. I could be saying I’m bored with nothing to do.” Larcombe added, “I thank my Aunt Shauna Larcombe, who owns this mare, my parents, and the whole crew back at the barn.”
Taylor Sheridan and his horse Hot Hollywood Whizky finished second in the Non Pro and Int. Non Pro, and tied for second in the Ltd. Non Pro, with a score of 72. The pair won $1,281.
Dana Pastorino and her horse Scootin Through Town also marked a 72 to tie for second in the Ltd. Non Pro, winning $73.
Trey Pool & Chics Gunna Gig Em Claim Nov. Horse Open Level 2 High Point Championship
Trey Pool entered Chics Gunna Gig Em in the Novice Horse Open Level 2 classes at the SWRHA Futurity & Horse Show with plans to school the mare for owner Tracy Higgenbottom. The mare, however, had other plans. “Both times I was going to school her, but she kept horse showing, so there wasn’t any reason to go off pattern. She showed good and was pretty honest,” Pool said of the mare.
The pair’s consistency paid off with the Novice Horse Open Level 2 High Point Championship. Pool has only had Chics Gunna Gig Em, by Colonels Smoking Gun and out of Smart Scooter Chic, for a couple months. “She’s a nice filly. Tracy had asked me to try her a little after Tulsa,” he said. “I have a big crew. Thank you to my wife, our customers, and all our help.”
The Weatherford, Texas, trainer is schooling futurity horses this week, and also has some non pro clients showing. “I’ll just be riding and coaching a little bit,” Pool said.
Casey Deary Wins Nov. Horse Open Level 1 High Point Championship on Quik Draw McGraw
Casey Deary brought Quik Draw McGraw to Ardmore for experience. The three-year-old reining horse, owned by Jody Puno and Jolan Puno, put together two consistent runs in both slates of the Novice Horse Open Level 1 to win the High Point Championship. “I wanted to get him out and put a few runs together and make sure all the parts were working,” Deary said. “It was pretty good. There were a few places where we still have a little homework to do, but he was pretty good for me. I had Mike McEntire there telling me what I needed to do to pull it off. We were laughing and cutting up through the whole run.”
Quik Draw McGraw is by HF Mobster out of Nestle Quik Chic, the dam of In Like Flinn, who Deary piloted to multiple wins, including two AQHA World Championships. “This colt is cute as can be and is a talented little horse. I just had to modify a little of what I like to do to operate the way he needs,” Deary explained.
Deary plans to show the flashy buckskin in Saturday’s Billingsley Ford Open Futurity. “I thank his owners Jody and Jolan. They’ve always been great to have a really nice horse for me to go show, and they let me do what I think is best for the horses. I thank them for being great customers,” Deary said.
Courtney Battison & Corona Tag Win Wednesday’s Nov. Horse Non Pro Levels 1 & 2 (2)
During Wednesday’s Novice Horse Non Pro classes, Courtney Battison piloted Corona Tag to the pair’s highest score ever – a 71.5. “We had a great run yesterday. Every time I show her, she feels better,” Battison said.
Battison has owned the talented mare, by Whiz N Tag Chex out of Kachina Oak Olena, for approximately four years. “She comes from a great family of horses. There are a lot of winners from that cross,” Battison explained. “She’s the only horse I’m showing here. We’ve qualified for the AQHA World Show, so that will be our next adventure.”
Battison, of Purcell, Okla., rides with Marie Kleiner of Xtra Quarter Horses. “Thank you to Marie. She does a great job. Of course, thank you to my horse, too,” Battison said.
There was a three-way tie for second in both levels of the Novice Horse Non Pro classes. Teresa Putman, William Clutter, and Lauren Love each marked a 71. Putman was riding Ruf Dixie Racer and Clutter rode Shiney Spooky Whiz. Love, who rode Show Like A Dream, won the high point buckle for both levels.
