The first horse entered the pen at the Hardy Murphy Coliseum- Ardmore at 9 a.m. sharp on Friday, October 17, 2025. Once the dust settled 60 draws later, Gina-Marie Schumacher and CS Sailor Made were crowned the Level 4 Champions of the Southwest Reining Horse Association Rancho Los Palominos Non Pro Futurity when their 218.5 topped the rest.
Schumacher has known CS Sailor Made since the filly was born, as she is out of Schumacher’s great mare, La Bigia Sailor. Bred and owned by XCS Ranch LLC, the three-year-old filly is by Snip O Lution.
At the mare’s birth, Schumacher was excited to learn what color she would be, because her dam is grey, and she enjoyed watching the filly grow and mature. “At two she was on the faster side, and once she was three, I really started riding her,” Schumacher said. “Once I started riding her, I really liked her.”
Before entering the show pen, Schumacher’s trainer, Duane Latimer, gave her “the usual” advice: “Go and do your thing!” Having been riding reining horses since she was 9 years old, Schumacher knows her job, but when she is nervous, Latimer’s preshow advice changes to: “I’ve got faith in you!”
Schumacher described her grey mare as “very stylish” in her stops and circles. She would like to improve on their turns before the NRHA Futurity, but she plans to take things easy with the mare through her futurity year so that she will be a stronger derby contender.
The reserve SWRHA Non Pro Futurity title went to Addisyn Schmersal, who scored a 218 on Star Face, owned by Hickory Creek Ranch, LLC. Bred by Greg L. Hill, Star Face is by Pale Face Dunnit out of Gorgeous Like A Star.
Non Pro Level 3 and Level 2 Champions – Jacob Zimmerman & Big Bambino
Having shown reiners for most of his life, Jacob Zimmerman is happy to have more say in the horses he shows because he prefers horses like Big Bambino, which he rode to the SWRHA Rancho Los Palominos Non Pro Levels 3 and 2 Championships. Bred by Spence Bell and owned by Jacob’s grandfather, Vaughn Zimmerman, Big Bambino is by A Vintage Smoke out of Snap N Go. Zimmerman appreciates the horse’s serene personality.
“When I was little, I had a lot of hot horses, and for the past two years, I’ve gotten to pick my own more,” he said. “I definitely prefer the chill horses.”
Trent Harvey had the gelding in training when Zimmerman discovered him at the National Reining Breeders Classic. He loved the horse the first time he tried him.
Leading up to the NRHA Futurity, he plans to work on his own confidence riding the three-year-olds in his string. He wants to focus on being aware of how fast his performance looks rather than how it feels as his patterns develop.
As for his run in the SWRHA Non Pro Futurity, Zimmerman said that his circles were his favorite part. “He’s really fun to show,” he said. “You just point and squeeze your legs, and he is right there with you. I couldn’t complain. He was right there with me the whole time, and he is really just a point-and-go horse. He’s a lot of fun.”
Zimmerman thanked Joe Schmidt Reining Horses for training Big Bambino after he bought him, the entire Tom McCutcheon Reining Horses crew, as well as his own family.
The Levels 3 and 2 Reserve titles went to Kristin Avila and Smoking Hot Voodoo when the judges awarded them 216. By No Smoking Required, Smoking Hot Voodoo is out of Xtra Voodoo Sinbar.
Level 1 Champion – Shelby Reine & The Next Top Gun
On a horse she bred, raised, trained, and dubbed “Goose,” Shelby Reine scored a 214 to claim the SWRHA Rancho Los Palominos Level 1 Non Pro Futurity title. She showed The Next Top Gun’s mother, Thelma Tag, during her youth career and says that the two are fairly similar.
“He reminds me very much of his mother in his circles,” she said. “In the show pen, anything you ask of them, they are going to do it with all of their hearts. They are not going to try to do anything bad.” Additionally, both horses love attention and treats.
Before entering the arena, Reine’s trainer advised her to ride and show what is under her.
She was very happy with the run; in fact, Goose, by Gunners Special Nite, is lovingly called “Mister Consistent” around the barn. “We had a really good run at the 100X in Waco, a good run at the 100X in Tulsa, and then the icing on the top to get ready for Oklahoma City in December was to get this run,” she said.
Reine hopes to make the L4 Finals in the NRHA Non Pro Futurity. She thanked Sebastian and Melanie Petroll Reining Horses, her parents, Mike and Alisha Reine, her sister, and her husband, Weston Minzenmayer.
Amy Stoney rode Icce T (SG Frozen Enterprise x Spooks Plain Jane) to the Level 1 Reserve Championship for owner Connie Stoney. They scored a 213 for the title.
Prime Time Non Pro Champion – Kitrina Makin & U My Boy Baloo
Just at the perfect time when Kitrina Makin was ready to step up from her ancillary horse, she was introduced to U My Boy Baloo by her daughter, Laura Makin, and her daughter’s boyfriend, Wade McDonald Performance Horses. At the SWRHA Rancho Los Palominos Futurity, Makin rode the gelding to the Prime Time Non Pro Championship when the duo scored a 212.5.
“This guy was in the barn, and I loved him,” she said. “I rode him a couple of times, and he just became mine! I think he’s special because he is just so forgiving. This is my first time putting a pattern together. I got in his way a few times, but it was pretty dang unique that he took care of me so well.”
Bred by Margarita Buey Arietti, U My Boy Baloo is sired by Pale Face Dunnit, out of Lil Chic Balou, and is Makin’s first futurity horse.
“He’s pretty dang consistent,” Makin touted. “He’s pretty quiet and old-minded.”
With only seven years of reining under her belt, Makin wants to continue to show her new horse through his aged event career and reach her personal goal of feeling confident in the show pen in the process.
Makin thanked the entire Wade McDonald team for their patience with her and willingness to help and support her. “It’s just a great group of people,” she concluded.
Kelly Stich rode I Am The Champion to a 208.5 to claim the Non Pro Futurity Prime Time Reserve title. I Am The Champion is by Gunners Special Nite out of I Am Magnificent.
Prime Time Masters Champion – Ellen Lloyd Cummins & Walla Walla Way
Ellen Lloyd Cummins has been reining for 25 years; therefore, she has ridden a wide range of horses, but there is a certain family of horses with similar traits that are especially near and dear to her heart. In the SWRHA Rancho Los Palominos Non Pro Futurity, Cummins rode her mare, Walla Walla Way to win the Masters (60+) Futurity division!
Walla Walla Way, by Walla Walla Whiz out of Dunit The Gunner Way, was bred by Cummins, herself. “I owned her mother, and two of her three-year-olds are showing this week,” Cummins shared. “We own the full sister to this one, and Sebastian [Petroll] won the Intermediate Futurity on her in 2020, so there is a lot of family history here.”
She said that the related mares are unique in how much they try to please. “Dunit The Gunner Way was just a huge achiever,” she said. “She just wanted to be her best for you, and this mare is the same way. I had to put lighter spurs on for her because she is just so sensitive. She is that high of an achiever. She wants to please. The mother was a lot like that, and the full sister was the exact same way.”
As she entered the arena, Cummins remembered worrying about the center because so many horses had been stopping and turning there. To remedy this, she chose to stop short of the center for better ground, but Sebastian cautioned against doing that in the future.
“That was on me because she turns really great, and shuts off really great,” Cummins touted. “She really listened everywhere and did everything I asked of her. She’s a really big stopper, but I missed one of them because I was worried about the tracks.”
With this run under her belt, Cummins is looking forward to competing in the NRHA Futurity on her mare. She thanked Sebastian and Melanie Petroll Reining Horses, her husband, and everyone else who supported her along the way.
Sliding into the reserve position was Teresa Putman on Call Me Deets, by Shepherd Star out of Sparklight Lillie. Putman also rides with the Petrolls, and she was also the breeder of her three-year-old mount.
