Trevor Dare got to take new “toy” Spat Toy Boy Gun for spin in the first slate of the ancillary Open, cruising to a 75.5 for owner Dana Wetherell, earning $1,465.
“I wanted to cruise him through and see what he felt like. He went in there and turned huge both ways, so I was like ‘Oh, that felt pretty good.’
“I wanted to go ahead and stay on pattern, show him, and not pick on him because I don’t think that horse had a mean bone in his body. I don’t think that he’s ever trying to be bad or cheat. I think it’s still us showing him what we want,” Dare said.
Spat Toy Boy Gun is sired by Spat Split and White and out of Snowy River Gunner. He was purchased by the Wetherell’s from Gina Schumacher, and has been receiving plenty of cookies ever since.
“I’ve got a really good group of non pros, and they want to have nice horses, so when we’re at the horse shows we keep our eyes out for something we really like,” Dare explained. “[The Schumachers] came up to me in Tulsa and asked if we’d be interested in him, so I jumped on it right away, I called my customer and said ‘You’ve got to buy this horse.’ Once they got to watch him a little bit and ride him, they were 100% on board.”
