Teresa Putman Wins SWRHA Futurity Novice Horse Non Pro on He Gets The Chex

Teresa Putman rode He Gets The Chex to a 72 score to win the Novice Horse Non Pro 2 October 17 at the Southwest Reining Futurity Show presented by Billingsley Ford. Topping a reining class was new to Putman. In her earlier show career, she competed in English and Western Pleasure events. Then a couple years ago she, in her words, “traded my last pleasure horse for a reiner.”

That was a game changer. She’s come to love competing in reining – and she credits her very special horse, He Gets The Chex, a son of Skeets Peppy out of Primero Chex. She laughed, and explained, “I’ve had him since he was two. When he was three and four and I would show him, I’d spin five times most of the time so it’s been a learning process!”

Throughout the time spent tackling a new discipline, Teresa has enjoyed the good gelding. “He gave me the opportunity to learn to go fast – well at least faster than in a pleasure class. But along the way he’s just been very enjoyable. I rode him in the mountains in California when we were out there – and he’s just a fun horse with a lot of character. He’ll drink beer out of your hand!”

Maybe it was inevitable that Teresa would end up riding reiners; her husband is multiple world champion and former NRHA Derby Limited Open Champion Gary Putman. She credited her husband for his help, along with friends Ruben Van Dorp and Garth Brown.

As far as reining, Teresa is hooked now. She even has a new futurity horse and – thanks to her win - a new Skyline Silversmiths buckle.

Lindsey McCutcheon finished as reserve champion on Mega Beat (Marthas Mega Jac X Back Beat) with a score of 71.5, earning $469 and a stable sheet from Dennard’s Farm Supply.
