Steve Archer and WR Kentucky Chic Win SWRHA Intermediate Open Ancillary
The Southwest Reining Horse Association Futurity is one of the largest pre-futurities for the National Reining Horse Association Futurity. Held annually at the Hardy Murphy Coliseum in Ardmore, Oklahoma, the event is a must-attend for Futurity hopefuls.
In addition to the Futurity, the event also features a slate of NRHA approved ancillary classes. On Thursday, October 20, Steve Archer and WR Kentucky Chic won the Intermediate Open ancillary championship with a score of 74. The win netted a check for $592, as well as an NRHA Morrison trophy and a custom Montana Silversmiths buckle.
“He was good today, and has been really good for quite a while,” said Archer, of Richmond, Texas. “I bought him in February and just put him where I like him. He’s a good student – I love that horse. He’s like driving a Ferrari.”
WR Kentucky Chic, by Smart Chic Olena and out of Docs Merry Lady, was recently sold to Brooke Kiser. “Brooke has been with us about eight years. She’s going to show him some and hopefully let me show him a little, too,” noted Archer.
Winning reserve and $407 with a 73.5 was W. Reid Fady and Chexarkana. Chexarkana, by Nu Chex To Cash and out of CR Kim, is owned by Kirks Rockin K Ranch Inc., of Celina, Texas.
The SWRHA Futurity and Show continues Friday with the Non Pro and Intermediate Non Pro ancillary classes, followed by the Winstar World Casino Non Pro Futurity.
Built in 1937, the historic Hardy Murphy Coliseum has been a mainstay as an Ardmore tourist attraction. Primarily designed to host horse and livestock shows, recent renovations to the facility have given it the flexibility to host even more events. Along with the space upgrades that allow the facility to stall 500 horses, the addition of air conditioning provides Hardy Murphy with the competitive ability to attract national and regional events. The renovations have resulted in a premier competitive equine facility.
